At the outbreak of the American Civil War, Danish immigrant August Hermansen joins the all-Scandinavian 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment, fighting for a cause he barely understands and for a country that doesn’t fully accept him.
His closest friend Jonas, a young Norwegian who sought his fortune in the South, is conscripted into the Confederate army. This causes a deep rift between them, forcing both men to confront the meaning of loyalty and moral values.
Set between 1860 and 1865, the series weaves between Wisconsin immigrant farms, Southern battlefields and into the depths and horrors of Andersonville prison.
August is a grounded and steady farmhand who believes enlistment will secure his place as an American, even as war ravages his soul and tears families apart.
Jonas, skilled, pragmatic, and happy-go-lucky, is driven by adventure and opportunity. Bound by friendship, the two men confront the same war from opposite moral grounds.
The series is told from the perspective of Scandinavian immigrants, in their own languages, and balances battlefield horror with the lives of families left behind.
While the American Civil War has been portrayed countless times, the story of the 15th Wisconsin Scandinavian Regiment and the immigrant soldiers who formed it has never been dramatized for the screen.
